A Holiday Survival Guide: How to Heal Back Pain and Sore Muscles After a Long Flight

Travel is food for the soul, but for the human body it is often a serious biomechanical challenge. I recently came back from a trip and felt firsthand how one small mistake can ruin an entire holiday. During a long flight, in the euphoria over the destination waiting for me, I completely neglected lumbar support. I sat for hours with nothing tucked under my lower back, and the result was brutal: the moment I landed, my muscles went into acute spasm.

Deep 1 — forearm pressure where fingers can't reach.

Instead of enjoying my first steps through a new city, I could barely walk. When kilometres of walking are added to the consequences of poor sitting, the body enters a state of "tourist strain syndrome". Luckily, I applied a protocol that brought me back to life, one every traveller should know.

An emergency relief protocol: tips & tricks from the field

If your back "locks up" or you get sore muscles while travelling, you don't have the luxury of waiting. Here is how to do an emergency "reset" in your hotel room:

  1. Elevation and venous drainage: Every evening after a full day of walking, raise your legs up against the wall at a 90-degree angle. 15 minutes in this position drastically reduces swelling and eases circulation that was slowed by hours of sitting and standing.
  2. Targeted stretching of muscle groups: Right after elevation, while the muscles are still warm and well-supplied with blood, do a light set of stretches to prevent permanent shortening of the fibres:
    • Quadriceps (front thigh): Standing on one leg, pull the heel of the other leg towards your glutes. Push your hips slightly forward. Hold for 30 seconds per leg.
    • Calves: Lean your hands on the wall, place one leg behind you and press the heel firmly into the floor until you feel a stretch. Key after long walks.
    • Psoas (hip flexor): Drop into a lunge with your knee on the floor and push your pelvis forward. This is the most important exercise for releasing pressure in the lower back after long sitting on a plane.
  3. Contrast hydrotherapy: While showering, alternate the water temperature on painful spots. 30 seconds of warm and 30 seconds of cold water in turn acts as "vascular gymnastics" that speeds up the removal of inflammation products.
  4. Local care: Before bed, apply a diclofenac-based gel to the critical spots, while during the day a mild analgesic can help you stay functional.

Why is home care only temporary "patching"?

Although these tricks saved me to visit all the museums and squares I had planned, I was aware I was only masking the problem. The body was under constant strain, and the muscle fibres had suffered micro-traumas that real rest alone cannot heal.

The real danger comes when you return to Belgrade. The accumulated fatigue, the consequences of sitting on the return flight and days spent on painkillers are a time bomb. Only when you get back do you realize how exhausted your body really is.

First stop after the airport: Runway Massage Studio

A trip truly ends only the moment you return your body to homeostasis. That is why my first step after landing was a trip to the massage table.

At Runway Massage Studio, our treatments are designed for exactly these situations. Whether it is our Deep 1 therapeutic massage or the Medium-pressure massage (Post Workout), we focus on:

  • Decompression of the lumbar region: Returning the vertebrae to their proper position after the pressure on the plane.
  • Manual elimination of lactate: A deep cleansing of the muscles from the lactic acid that not even the hottest shower can draw out.
  • Restoring neuro-muscular balance: Resetting the nervous system and releasing accumulated stress.

Conclusion

A holiday is an investment in your memories, but don't let one mistake on the plane cost you your health. Patch yourself up while travelling, be smart with stretching and elevation, but the moment you return – give your body the full overhaul it deserves.
